Be well balanced (temperate, sober of mind), be vigilant and cautious at all times; for that enemy of yours, the devil, roams around like a lion roaring [in fierce hunger], seeking someone to seize upon and devour. 1 Peter 5:8
Don’t you just love this translation? It’s so descriptive, it makes you see yourself as a warrior for Jesus, having authority over the enemy. But it wasn’t until recently I noticed the word devour and associated it with another awesome Scripture Numbers 14:9. This is where the spies had come back with their report of the Promised Land and the people were disheartened by 10 of them. But Caleb told them not to listen to them and go against God, because the enemy will be our bread, or as the NIV puts it “we will devour them”, only do not fear them.
Do you see that? The enemy is searching for those he can devour. But Caleb say we will devour the enemy, he actually calls them our bread, something we use as nourishment to only become stronger. Now think about what happened to all the Israelites who believed the ten spies, they never made it into the Promised Land. But Joshua and Caleb, who saw their enemies as their bread, they not only made it into the Promised Land, but we are told Caleb possessed his final land promised to him by Moses 45 years later and was as youthful and strong as when it was first granted to him.
When we walk in our God given authority and see the enemy as our bread and that we will devour him instead of him devouring us, we will live in divine health and strength. Satan and his minions stand no chance against a blood bought Believer who knows who they are in Christ and the power of His resurrection living inside of them. Let’s start giving him a reality check and walk in the victory we’ve been given,
