Just as day was breaking, Jesus stood on the shore; yet the disciples did not know that it was Jesus. Jesus said to them, “Children, do you have any fish?” They answered him, “No.” He said to them, “Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some.” So they cast it, and now they were not able to haul it in, because of the quantity of fish. John 21:4-6 ESV
Yesterday we ended the passage with the disciples fishing all night and catching nothing. Today the passage opens with the dawn. The Light of the World, standing on the shore, bringing light into their dark and unproductive circumstances. But by them following one simple command, a different kind of light began to shine, a spiritual light that would reignite their original desire to follow Jesus.
When He told them to cast their nets on the right side of the boat, the familiarity of the situation stirred the memory of three and a half years ago. And doing what Jesus ask was such a simple thing, because they remembered what had happened before and sure enough the same result happened again. How often do we find ourselves at a familiar place and Holy Spirit leading us to trust Jesus once more. They were reminded that when Jesus is involved, and they respond with trusting hearts they receive more than they ever could expect.
What are you facing right now that seems hopeless, frustrating and unproductive? Take time to step away from the destractions of this world and focus on Jesus and all He is. Listen to His leading, step out into His light and follow Him to His place of provision and productivity into a place of overflow. Then the best thing we can do with the overflow is to share it with others so they can see the abundace of God even in times of want.
