O God, you are my God;
I earnestly search for you.
My soul thirsts for you;
my whole body longs for you
in this parched and weary land
where there is no water. Psalm 63:1
These don’t sound like the words of a bear and lion slayer, giant killer, great warrior and king, but they are. David was all these things and more because he learned that all he ever needed could be found in the presence of the Lord. This longing to be with God didn’t happen overnight or at a revival service or emotional moment. It was developed over a lifetime and like most of us, he even found his relationship with God growing cold and distant at times. But David always knew how to revive their relationship, and that was to meet with Him and rest in His presence.
David’s deep relationship began with him being the youngest insignificant child in the family. As a young boy he was sent out to tend the sheep. Alone in a desolate place with no one to talk with, he began to talk with God. Does that sound familiar? Maybe we’re not tending sheep in nowhere land, but how many of us feel all alone at times. God became his best friend, he talked with Him about everything and God helped him overcome anything that was trying to destroy him. Without him even realizing it, he began to believe that there was nothing that him and God could not accomplish together. That’s why he could kill a lion and bear. Why he could stand up to a giant who had been taunting the great army of Israel. No one else, not king Saul, not Joab their general or any other soldier was willing to stand up to him.
But here came young David in the name of the Lord his God and picked a fight with a 9 foot giant because he was talking smack about his best friend and Lord God of all of Israel! Because David knew God was with him and his back, he allowed God to direct him to use the skills he developed protecting his sheep to destroy the enemy. Today, we too have many enemies coming up against us in all areas of our lives. Like David we need to realize the victories to all these foes that the battle isn’t ours, it’s God’s! All we have to do is follow God’s lead, but how can we if we don’t spend time with Him to learn His ways and know His voice. Let your prayer today be that of David’s in Psalm 63 and I encourage you read the entire chapter because God knows, we are truly living in a parched and weary land that needs refreshing water and revival. May it begin with us.
