When the holy day of Pentecost came 50 days after Passover, they were gathered together in one place.
Picture yourself among the disciples: A sound roars from the sky without warning, the roar of a violent wind, and the whole house where you are gathered reverberates with the sound. Then a flame appears, dividing into smaller flames and spreading from one person to the next. All the people present are filled with the Holy Spirit and begin speaking in languages they’ve never spoken, as the Spirit empowers them. Acts 2:1-4 VOICE
Yesterday was Penetecost, the appointed time given as the birth of the church. And what a celebration it was, God showed up big time with the Gift that would keep on giving, His Holy Spirit. This day changed the world forever. But just like the world, the church has forgotten its roots and purposes and God is saying it’s time you come back.
Today’s passage is linked with Pentecost and preached about the wind and the fire and the speaking in tongues. But just as Jesus was preparing the disciples for 50 days, to see Him even when they can’t physically see Him and hear Him even though He’s physically not speaking this passage is teacing us the same things. Think about it, we say we see the wind. But truthfully, we don’t, we just see and feel the effects of the wind. Sometimes it’s a gentle caress on our skin, others we lterally need to push against it with all our might to keep moving. We see leaves blow and dust kicked up, houses blown off their foundations and waves on water. But never do we see the wind itself. When Holy Spirit “blew” into that house and room, He was saying I’m here and I will never leave you nor forsake you. I will be all you need to accomplish whatever you need to. I Am the power within you that will show the world Who Jesus truly is, so all will know Him and through Him come to know our Abba Father.
On that day God set the foundation that the church and it is Christ in you the hope of glory Colossians 1:27 through Holy Spirit that empowers us to fulfill His purposes not ours. The first and formost thing to remember, is that Jesus is now in every person who accepts Him through His Holy Spirit. We are unified through having the same Spirit to work together, though differently to show others who God truly is. Just the fact that the same Holy Spirit spoke differently to others the same message but in different languages, shows different methods and modes aof preaching and teaching the same message are necessary. So why do we think every church has to be alike? Why do we think “we” have the only correct way? As long as the foundation is firm in Christ Jesus, how Holy Spirit delivers the message then is up to Him. That’s why it’s so important to follow the Spirit’s leading in our lives.
Over the next weeks, we will be studying the power and infulence of the first church and how we need to get back to the basics. I encourage you to spend some time this week just digging into this passage and asking the Holy Spirit to reveal to you the hidden things that need to be brought back into His light. As His Light shines, we will be able to better follow the path that He has set for us rather than making our own and make a greater impact for the Gospel of Jesus as our Father always intended it to be.
