Christ says ‘Yes’ to all of God’s promises, so that they become true. So when we pray, we say ‘Yes, amen!,’ because we know that Christ has done it. And when we do that, we are saying that God is great. 2 Corinthians 1:20 Easy English Bible
The Promises of God in Scripture having always been a place of debate in the Church. Some believe that His promises are conditional. Others believe some are specific to a certain group of people. Still there are some who believe that all of the promises of God are for every Believer for all time. But it’s important for us to know what the Bible says about His promises to us through His Word.
When considering an explanation or wanting to use parts of Scripture, it’s so important not only to know context but to know who and where it’s being written to, why are they writing it to them. Paul in 2 Corinthians 1 was explaining that he planned to stop by and visit with them on his way to Macedonia and then a second visit on his way back. However, after making the plans he received word of continued unrest in the Corinthian church. Paul’s second visit to them that is not recorded in Acts, was not a good one. He was then led by the Lord to write a strong letter to them rather than have a face to face confrontation with them that could have hurt the Church and it’s influence.
Now some were accusing him of having an agenda, being selfish and not caring about them. He then writes that him and his companions not only preached the Gospel but lived with lives of integrity by following Jesus and His examples. And the change in plans was not arbitrary. Just as God keeps His promises, they would keep theirs also, unless God changed their plans. We can learn from this passage that all of God’s promises are fulfilled in Jesus Christ because He didn’t abolish the Law but fulfilled it, so all the promises are found and done in the death and resurrection of Jesus.
Beloved, be assured that those promises still are found in Jesus and you can count on them. However, we need to remember though that God sees us as individuals and so not every promise every person will need. But the ones we do, they are not only available to us, they are waiting for us to activate them through Holy Spirit and to live as though we already have them. As you’re waiting, remember to keep your focus on Jesus not the promise and you will see your faith become sight.
