But Jesus spoke to them at once. “Don’t be afraid,” he said. “Take courage! I am here!” Then he climbed into the boat, and the wind stopped. They were totally amazed, for they still didn’t understand the significance of the miracle of the loaves. Their hearts were too hard to take it in. Mark 6:50-52
When we hear about a hard heart, automatically we think about sin and rebellion against God. And although that’s true, not all hard hearts are because of sinning, Jesus also spoke of hearts that were so tied to the natural and this world they couldn’t accept the supernatural that Jesus presented to them. Even though they Prior to their boat ride to the other side, they watched Jesus feed between 15,000 – 20,000 people with five loaves and two fish they borrowed from a boys bagged lunch.
Then Jesus compelled them to get into the boat, probably because as skilled fisherman they knew a storm was brewing, but He told them he would meet them. And He did, but not on the other side, but on the water. After watching the feeding of the 5,000, and Him saying He would meet them, they shouldn’t have been surprised when He came walking on the water. But they were and even believed He was a ghost. And the truth is we are no different, we have experienced and read and heard about miraculous things God has done. But we have a hard time believing it because we relate more and believe in the things of this world than God’s promises and His Word.
So how do we soften our hearts to the things of God and how He moves and works? We spend more time in His presences, reading His Word and communing with Him. In this we get to not only know Him better, our trust in Him develops and our hearts soften to things of God. Our renewed spirit and our flesh are always at war, and the only way to overcome is to be focused on Jesus who won the victory for us at the cross and through His resurrection. Let go of this world and embrace the promises and truths of the Word and watch things change, not to mention you yourself.
