Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword, with a spear, and with a javelin. But I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. 1 Samuel 17:45
Lately I’ve been hearing messages and devotions about David from his exploits, his times of disobedience and his adultery and betrayal of Uriah and his murder. And we can learn various lessons from all those events and his response to them in his Psalms. But the one that put David on the map of history was with Goliath. And it got me thinking, what if there never was a Goliath? The event in his life that looked impossible and he was way out of his league to this day proves that nothing is impossible with God!
This young shepherd came delivering bread and cheese for his warrior brothers and ended up being the hero of the day. We love to recount and tell his story to people and it never seems to get old. But have we ever thought when we have a “Goliath” show up in our lives to we see it as an impossible situation of the enemy trying to stop us from achieving the awesome things God has planned for us? Or do we see it as an opportunity show others the greatness of our God and ourselves find a deeper and more intimate relationship with Him. The building of trust that David had going from killing a lion and bear, to a nine foot Giant who also wanted to devour and destroy him but also prepared him for what he was going to do for God the rest of His life. The next time life begins to be hindered or even destroyed remember Goliath was David’s “coming out” party to show the awesome greatness of our God and we’re still talking about it. What are people going to be saying about us, will they know the greatness of our God and how much He loves us, or will they only hear about David and Goliath and never learn of it first hand.
