Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so God can heal you. When a believing person prays, great things happen. 17 Elijah was a human being just like us. He prayed that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the land for three and a half years! 18 Then Elijah prayed again, and the rain came down from the sky, and the land produced crops again. James 5:16-18 NCV
It seems like no matter where we look today whether here in the US or across the globe, there is trouble, war. crisis and catastrophe everywhere. And all too often we look at the headlines and hear the reports and wonder what can be done, this looks hopeless. Or the “Christian” response, we’re living in end times, so what can we do?
Well, although it becomes more and more evident every day that we are in the last days, a sit and wait for the end is not the plan God has for His children. He wants us to be active, helping to prepare the way for others to join us in His Kingdom at the very least. But while we’re doing that we are to be living like His Son while He was here on the earth to have influence for the Lord and victory over evil.
Besides being out on the frontlines physically everyday, we also can be fighting in the heavens with our prayers. When it looks like there is nothing we can do or be of no effect in a situation, we need to pray. We are told in Ephesians 6 that “Our fight is not against people on earth, but against the rulers and authorities and the powers of this world’s darkness, against the spiritual powers of evil in the heavenly world.” However too many times we may believe that, but we think our prayers aren’t powerful enough. But look at today’s verse, when a Believing person prays, or in some translations a righteous person prays, great things happen. Then it goes on and gives us an example using one, if not the greatest Prophet in the Bible Elijah. James reminds us Elijah was a human just like us, but he truly believed what he prayed would happen, and it did. What if we prayed with that same belief in our hearts? If you are the “righteousness of God through Chris Jesus”, then you are and we can then expect great things to happen when we pray.
If not now, then when would be a more appropriate time to step up and pray believing with all our hearts that God will change everything as we step out in faith believing. Our world needs us to get out of the boat and stand on our faith in the One God sent, Jesus.
