Turn my heart toward your statutes and not toward selfish gain. Psalm 119:36
Remember that Willie Nelson song, You Were Always on My Mind? Well, for most of us it should be I Was Always On My Mind. Why? because if we want to be honest, our lives are self-focused. I was horrified when I realized how may times I felt sorry for myself by thinking I deserve better, I shouldn’t be going through this, God’s forgotten me. Saying or thinking I need this or I need that and I need it now! It is true out of our mouths, our hearts speak (Luke 6:45). And frankly we need to take more notice to what we say, because it’s telling us what we’re holding in our hearts and all too often we should be concerned, for Proverbs 23:7 tells us as we think in our hearts, that’s who we are.
But here’s the really good news. Even if we don’t like what we hear and see, God can help us change our hearts, by learning from His heart of love, grace, mercy and forgiveness. As we receive these love lessons from Him, not only are our hearts changed, but we find we want to share His love with others. We become more generous with everything in our lives and in every way. May today’s verse be one of the prayers of our hearts, that we would ask God to help keep our hearts soft and pliable to learn from Him and live a life of giving through a heart of God’s love.
