And I ask him that with both feet planted firmly on love, you’ll be able to take in with all followers of Jesus the extravagant dimensions of Christ’s love. Reach out and experience the breadth! Test its length! Plumb the depths! Rise to the heights! Live full lives, full in the fullness of God. Ephesians 3:18-19 MSG
Yesterday we went down memory lane remembering the song I Want To Know What Love Is written by Mick Jones of Foreigner. What I didn’t tell you was how the song was written and produced, Mick Jones explained, “I always worked late at night, when everybody left and the phone stopped ringing. ‘I Want To Know What Love Is’ came up at three in the morning sometime in 1984. I don’t know where it came from. I consider it a gift that was sent through me. I think there was something bigger than me behind it. I’d say it was probably written entirely by a higher force.”
This was only the beginning, it was like the song had a life of its own. Although it was written and recorded, something didn’t seem right, He felt like it needed a spiritual enhancement, but didn’t know how to achieve it. He was having lunch with a guy who ran a gospel music label and later sent him some albums. One of those was the New Jersey Mass Choir, when he heard them he knew how to finish the song. He drove out to hear them, they were fresh and he asked them to record the song. They chose 30 of them to come into the studio, they took several takes, but none of them seemed right. So the choir stood in a circle, held hands a prayed the Lord’s Prayer. When they said amen, the song was recorded with one take and everyone was felt an overcoming power that moved hearts. There seemed to be something supernatural about the song that people could identify in their own personal lives.
As far as I can tell Mick Jones never professed to be a Believer, but God visited him in a very difficult time of his life, when in his own words, he didn’t know if his heart was half-empty or half-full. The song written that night had an anointing on it that touched many lives in many ways and hopefully it led some to a relationship with the Lord. Don’t ever limit God, He is always reaching down to His valuable and treasured creation to come into a relationship with Him through His Son Jesus. He doesn’t just talk with those who have accepted Jesus, He talks to everyone from time to time. Let’s pray that hearts will be receptive to His voice and turn to Him.
