As the deer pants for streams of water,
so my soul pants for you, my God. Psalm 42:1
As I was driving out of my Mom’s driveway I saw a deer standing. She turned and saw me, then walked and stood still behind a large bush. As I drove by I looked in my side mirror and saw her watching me leave and then slowly come back out. It was like she thought I couldn’t see her once she got behind the bush. It made me smile and think about how we do the same thing with God.
His word makes it very clear that God always sees us. David even went as far as saying, “where can I go that you’re not there?” Ps. 139:7. Yet so often we try to hide in vain, often because of guilt, pride, independence or rebellion. But just like Adam and Eve in the Garden, He calls to us to commune with Him in spite of our sin. He longs to remind us that it is our relationship that calls us into His presence, no matter what we have or haven’t done. It isn’t our behavior, but rather our righteous standing with Him through the finished work of Jesus.
When we remember how much He loves us and how He sees us as His beloved children, can we long to be in and enjoy His presence. No need to hide in fear, but to walk in His protection and care always being refreshed and renewed by His love and grace. Take time to meet with Him today and have your soul restored from the ravages of this world by the One who loves to commune with you.
