Why are you cast down, O my soul,
and why are you in turmoil within me?
Hope in God; for I shall again praise him,
my salvation and my God. Psalm 42:11 ESV
I don’t know about you, but I’m getting so weary of all the political ads. Just when you think they can’t get any lower, they take another nose dive. With the 24/7/365 information flow our minds never get a chance to rest and renew. And when that happens we get disappointed, discouraged, depressed and in the words of the New King James Version, disquieted. This is a very descriptive word, which means loss of sense of security or peace of mind. I believe a lot of people would say this is how they are feeling.
But look what the rest of Psalm 42 says, that we should hope in God and in Hebrew once again it has a deeper meaning than in the English. Tiq’vah not only means a confident expectation of receiving something desired like in the Greek, but it also means a twisted cord. Which comes from the root word kavah which means to wait, to bind and entwine. Think about that, hope has it’s roots in waiting, to entwine or bind, a rope or cord. So this is saying our hope entwines us, binds us to God who is our salvation. He is what we need to hold onto when we begin to feel insecure and losing our peace because of what we’re hearing and seeing. So when we find ourselves growing weary, disappointed, discouraged and possibly even depressed, we need to bind ourselves to the only One who truly knows us and He will give us back our joy, peace and stability again.
