For this is what the Sovereign Lord says, I Myself will search for My sheep and look after them. Ezekiel 34:11
When praying about what to write for devotion today, I was reminded about the time my one Bassett Hound died unexpectedly. Although I rushed him to the 24 hour Animal Emergency Hospital, he still died from a ruptured aorta of the heart. That was a really long drive home and a sleepless night, my heart was broken. The next day I just wandered around like I had lost my way, although the other dogs were there, we were all grieving. Especially Harvey, they had grown up together and when we rescued them we decided to to keep them together, so we rescued both.
When we were burying him, I kept hearing an animal crying. I looked around by the property next door that had goats and sheep, but saw nothing. Later that evening a friend came to spend some time with me as she knew how heartbroken I was. We were outside with the other dogs sitting on the porch and I could still hear that same cry and I couldn’t take it anymore. So we went on a search and I decided we would walk the fence line beyond where we could see. When we walked the cry became louder and finally we saw a mother goat with her horns caught in the fence and her baby was standing beside her. We spoke calmly to her and finally we got her loose and her and the baby ran away in freedom, But suddenly she stopped, turned around and wiggled her ears at us as if to say thank you.
As we walked back to the house, my friend looked at me and said, “I came to comfort you, but I received comfort too. Now I see how God can use something bad to accomplish something good. And now I also feel better, because I helped set a helpless momma goat and her baby free.” Both of us learned a lessons that evening, God used the cries of that goat to get me to come out of my grief and not only hear but search for the cries of another who needed help. In the process of seeking God spoke to my heart and brought healing and he also spoke to my friend, who needed encouragement. We saw God’s redemption of a bad situation and His protection over those helpless animals until He sent help.
Maybe you might be thinking God doesn’t hear your cries, but He does and He wants to help you, because He is the our Shepherd, He’ll help you reach out to Him and be set free of whatever has you entangled and in turn, then you also can help others. Let Him help you today. As a side note, that goat, from time to time when she would see me she’d come over to the fence and lick my hand, along with her baby. What a wonderful reminder of God’s care and how grateful we should be for His never ending love!
