I pray that God, the source of hope, will fill you completely with joy and peace because you trust in him. Then you will overflow with confident hope through the power of the Holy Spirit. Romans 15:13
I love to study the Hebrew language, it’s so intricate, yet simple. So to the point, yet deep. the words can paint a picture in our minds and touch our hearts with understanding. It’s no wonder it’s the language of God. One of the words I’ve found fascinating is the word for hope. In Hebrew it’s the word Tiq’vah which is a combination of the physical derived from it’s root word meaning cord or rope and an inner attitude of confident expectation.
Now use those meanings to paint a picture of today’s verse of God as the source of our hope and relation to our faith. We understand hope as expectation, but notice the Hebrew makes it a confident hope that works through our faith in Jesus and His finished work on the cross and resurrection. Now add to that, while we are waiting for what we are hoping for to manifest, He gives us a rope to hold on to, Jesus.
Now the picture of this rope (Tiq’vah) can be seen when the spies give Rahab the scarlet rope the escape by to hang out the window when Israel attacks Jericho to keep her and her household safe (Joshua 2:17-20). This rope is a picture of Jesus who shed His blood so we could receive His salvation. Which in turn gives us protection, provision, deliverance, health and peace. So the next time you’re feeling like you’re hanging on by a rope, you are, and His name is Jesus!
