Above all else, guard your heart,
for everything you do flows from it. Proverbs 4:23
I’m sure you heard the saying, “trust your heart.” Yet the Scriptures remind us that we can’t trust our hearts for they are wicked. So is the Bible contradicting itself? The answer is no, because there are two kinds of hearts, those that are of the world and those that are transformed and led by God. But the Word also reminds those whose hearts are transformed, still need to guard it for it still can be influenced by the things of this world.
Today’s verse reminds us why that is so important, because everything we do flows from it. The heart is the throne where either God sits on, or ourselves. When we ask Jesus to become the Savior and Lord of our lives, we are told we become a new creation(2 Corinthians 5:17) old things have passed a way and everything become new. We now have the ability to think differently because we now have the mind of Christ (Romans 12:2). And how we think affects our hearts and our hearts affect how we think and act.
So it is true, if we are in a relationship with Jesus as our Savior and Lord, He now lives and rules (He acts as our emotional umpire) in our hearts and leads and directs us through His Holy Spirit. We no longer lean on our own understanding, but on His leading and wisdom (Proverbs 3:5-6). In this, then His grace flows from our hearts and we then can live a life that shows others the powerful cleansing of the grace of God that overcomes the world.
