And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” Genesis 1:28
How many times have we heard or said this verse and it made of think of many children. And although that can be a part of the meaning it’s far from the whole meaning. The Hebrew word for fruitful in this verse is Pehri from the root word Parah which means much more than a biological process, it’s a divine mandate and blessing. They speak of productivity, abundance, and the fulfilment of potential; purposeful existence — a life that yields positive outcomes. Now that covers a whole lot more than just having babies. It touches every area of our lives!
Rabbi’s like to say one who is truly fruitful has journeyed through the levels of spiritual maturity, decree and declares a thing and expects signs to follow. When we are fruitful, we understand our dominion, authority and power we have in Jesus Christ. According to Scripture God has always wanted for us to be developing, growing and walking it out until we go to Him or He comes to get us. Paul put it this way, that we change from glory to glory because in studying His word, speaking His truths and living out what we’ve learned we become more and more like Jesus. And in so doing we will be able to achieve what He told us to, to heal the sick, raise the dead and cast out demons (Matt. 10:8). And how many of us know that is what the world needs so desperately to see the love of God in a way that shows them who He truly is. Let’s be fruitful and multiply God’s way!
