Work for the well-being of the city where I have sent you to and pray to the Lord for this. For if it is well with the city you live in, it will be well with you. Jeremiah 29:7 NLV
Today is a bittersweet day in our nation. Some of our citizens are very excited about the Inauguration of our 46th President, others not so much and others are opposed, still others are now living in fear and anxiety. Whatever your stance, there is one thing we need to remember, Romans 13:1 tells us that every authority that exists has been instituted by God. I know that may fly in the face of some, but the truth of the Word is the truth. The Greek word for institute is tasso, which means to establish, determine, a set time or course of events. When Pilate falsely believed he held Jesus’ destiny in his hands, Jesus answered with, “you would have no authority over Me unless it was given to you from above” John 19:11. This reminds us that no matter how you’re feeling on this day, we need to follow God’s leading and we are to be good, responsible and respectful citizens.
Today’s verse was given to Jeremiah by God when the Israelites were taken captive to Babylon. God was instructing them if they would honor Him and pray for peace and prosperity for the nation and towns they were in, they would experience, peace and prosperity and live a good life. He goes on to encourage them that He has plans for them that will give them hope and a good future. And most importantly that when they would call on Him, He would listen. Then He goes further and tells them,” if you seek Me with all your hearts, you will find Me and I will restore what you have lost.”
No matter what circumstance we may find ourselves in, living out the principles of the His Word, will help us live out the lives He has planned for us to give us a hope and a future.
