For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven. Ecclesiastes 3:1
As I was driving the other day listening to Word FM, a message came on about the benefits of the Fall Season. It was a great reminder of God’s blessings no matter what season it is, and so with each new season I’m going to remind us of the goodness of God.
The first thing that begins to happen is the days become shorter, not from the time change, but because of God’s plan. Because of this, our body’s natural rhythm begins to slow down and we find ourselves wanting to rest sooner. This has been scientifically proven to help lower stress levels. Once we gain the hour back we lost in the Spring, we often adjust our sleep and have a tendency to sleep longer. And since most Americans don’t get enough sleep, this is welcome news.
Next the leaves begin to change from green to beautiful golden hues, along with deep reds and vibrant orange. These are what we call warm colors that stimulate good and positive feelings. The beauty of the scenery causes us to focus on the majesty and how awesome God truly is. And the aromas, how stimulating they are from the crisp fresh air, the falling leaves and camp fires, to the warm fall spices of cinnamon, cloves, ginger and nutmeg. All these spices have numerous health benefits from heart health, diabetes and anti-inflammatory properties. Not to mention the calming aromas of pumpkin and apple pies baking.
The cooler air stimulates us to get out and exercise more and even physical contact. It’s fun to snuggle together wrapped in a blanket or even just give none another a friendly hug. All these things stimulate our feel good hormones and we find we enjoy things more. These are just a few of the benefits of Fall and all these things our society needs more of. Let’s take advantage of this time and enjoy all the wonderful things God has provided for us not only to enjoy His nature around us, but one another.
