Understand [this], my beloved brethren. Let every man be quick to hear [a ready listener], slow to speak, slow to take offense and to get angry. James 1:19 AMPC
When we read this we usually see it in relation to one another. But what if we would consider it in our relationship with God. We should go to Him not only in prayer, but have conversations with Him. Be so close with Him that we’re willing to share the good things and the bad. Look for counsel and direction.
But think about it, are we quick to listen and be a ready listener when it comes to conversations with God? Or like most of us we do all the talking, or should I say all to often whining and complaining. What if we entered into our meeting time with our Abba as a ready listener? Coming into His presence ready to pour out your heart, and then sit quietly and let Him to counsel you as a loving parent.
Be prepared you may be offended by some of the things He reveals to you, but know it is because He loves you and wants you to deal with things He knows are hindering you from living the abundant life Jesus died to give you. And if you become angry, tell Him, He knows it anyway. He can help you quench your anger and realize that anger is rooted in fear and with Him we have nothing to fear because He is our Guardian and Protector.
So the next time before you meet with Abba, decide to go in with little to say, a listening ear, ready to hear the truth in love and watch your relationship with Him deepen and grow. And as it does, you will accomplish more than you could ever think, dream or ask.
