This is the day the Lord has made;
We will rejoice and be glad in it. Psalm 118:24
Today I will be presiding over a funeral service for one of God’s saints that I was blessed to be her Pastor. Miss Madeline lived a good long life and this December she would have been 96. She was one of the most gracious person I have ever had the pleasure of knowing.
She was such an integral part of our church, although very quiet and always in the background. But she left such an impression on everyone she met. Always would sign up to help whereever it was needed, but one of her favorite ways to serve was with prayer, especially after she was unable to attend church anymore. She kept her prayer list up to date and was always checking with me how everyone was doing and if there was anything else she should be praying about.
She always had a smile to give you and a warm and pleasant hello, even when things weren’t going so well with her. As she grew older she fell more and more. The one day after she fell and broke her shoulder I visited her. Of course there was the smile and I asked her how she was feeling and she replied, “This is the day the Lord has made, I will rejoice and be glad in it.” There she was with a broken shoulder, black eye and broken glasses, but she still was praising the Lord. And of course the next question was, “any new prayer requests?” The senior members of our churches are such a blessing, one we so often underappreciate.
So today I’m asking that if you have any seniors in your church that cannot serve like they did or attend anymore I encourage you to reach out to them because chances are they still have so much more service they want to give to the church, just in a different way. You will be a blessing to them and they in turn will truly bless you.
