And he called his ten servants, and delivered them ten pounds, and said unto them, Occupy till I come. Luke 19:13
This is one of the most misunderstood verses in the older translations of the Bible, all because of the word occupy. In our modern English it is defined as to take up a space or place; to engage the attention or energy of; to take or to fill. But in the Greek it’s defined as to do business or trade, employed in a business. So Jesus wasn’t telling us to just sit and wait around for Him to come rapture us, but to take an active part in showing this world how to do business God’s way. Most of our social interaction happens in the marketplaces, stores, gas stations and commerce the times of buying and selling. An opportunity to show the benefits of doing business God’s way by helping one another to live with integrity, excellence and loving others as Jesus has loved us.
We don’t like to admit it, but we let the world influence us more than we influence the world! The reason we even need revival is not because the world is getting worse. But because the church forgets who they are and Whose they are. When we remember that the church is Christ’s body, through which He speaks and acts now in this world. What are we saying? How are we speaking to people? How are we treating others? Are we being not only kind, but acting in and with excellence? Are we willing to go above and beyond what is expected of us? Are we taking time to really get to know people? All these questions should challenge us to love others as Jesus has loved us. Let’s determine this week to see how often we show Jesus to people and His love, mercy and grace, sometimes without even saying a word.
