The Spirit of the Lord the Eternal One is on Me.
Why? Because the Eternal designated Me
to be His representative to the poor, to preach good news to them. He sent Me to tell those who are held captive that they can now be set free,
and to tell the blind that they can now see.
He sent Me to liberate those held down by oppression. Luke 4:18
I enjoy watching a show called Drive Through History on TBN. Each show takes an event or special day in history and takes you from it’s roots to how we see or celebrate it now. Dave Stotts literally gets in various types of vehicles and drives to each destination that was a part of each topic. Of course the last holiday drive through was Labor Day and how it got it’s start and how we celebrate it today. The show was filled with information, too much to share in this devotional. But there was one nugget of information that stuck with me.
Now us “older” citizens are familiar with the term grease monkey and today it usually means someone who likes to work on cars, specifically the engines. But that’s not where the name came from. Oh, it was given to someone who worked on engines in the early 1900’s, but these someone’s were usually little boys between the ages of 8-10. They worked twelve hour days in manufacturing plants continually refilling small glass jars with either whale oil or later on motor oil that were attached to generators that ran the machines, That was their only job greasing the machines so they wouldn’t seize up burn it out. Without them, the plants wouldn’t be able to produce the much needed products the nation had come to use.
I couldn’t get that image out of my mind of little boys, probably in overalls going around the plants with their little oil cans refilling the jars as they needed it to run optimally and efficiently. As simple as it sounds, it was very dangerous work, because they had to add the oil while the generators were running.
It made me think about how we have been anointed to be Jesus’ representatives to preach the oil of the Word to heal the brokenhearted, to set free those held captive by destructive habits and mindsets and open the eyes of the blind. We should be “Grease Monkey’s” to the world to help people stop having their lives seized up by the enemy whose only desire is to steal, kill and destroy. Let’s take the healing oil of the Holy Spirit and the oil of joy that we have been given through Jesus and pour them onto those who are so wounded and hurting. As we show them the love, mercy and grace of God their hearts will be open and they will accept Him as their Savior and Lord.
