The wind blows where it wishes and you hear the sound of it, but do not know where it comes from and where it is going; so is everyone who is born of the Spirit.” John 3:8
Lately we’ve been experiencing windy days and nights. But yesterday as I was walking into Costco feeling like Moses walking into the desert of exile in the Ten Commandments I too was being taught a lesson. As it was taking my breath away and blowing things around the parking lot including my dropped glove, I thought, how powerful something can be that can’t be seen. And I thought about the power of Holy Spirit. It is a power like nothing this earth can produce.
It might not be able to be seen, but it can be felt, nudging and gently directing us. As my Mom and I were literally being blown against entering Weis Markets I had to laugh how we were fighting to get into the store. If I wouldn’t have been holding onto her she would have been blown over! But it also made me think about how many times Holy Spirit is trying to direct us in a different direction, but we just keep on plowing through to our destination. Thank God for His forgiveness in our disobedience and His patience in helping us see His ways.
But it wasn’t until I got home that I realized that the wind isn’t always just seen, but is also heard. As I was walking to the barn I heard that signing sound my aluminum front porch banister makes when the wind blows the right way. And it made me think that maybe when we feel the resistance of Holy Spirit, we should decide to stop and listen realizing He has something important to tell us. I thought about one of my favorite Christmas songs, Do You Hear What I Hear? When we see the effects of the wind of Holy Spirit, it is our cue to stop and listen to what the “Little Lamb” of Christmas has to say to us. In so doing we then will know His will and way and can follow His lead.
