You tried to harm me, but God made it turn out for the best, so that he could save all these people, as he is now doing. Genesis 50:20 CEV
Just before dawn on New Year’s Day, a pastor friend of mine got a call that one of his congregational members was called by Brother-in-law to help when his car broke down. He went, and in the process of helping, he was hit and killed by a speeding car. And as tragedies like this unfold the questions begin. How? What? Why? It seems all so senseless and incomprehensible. He was so happy at the church’s New Years Eve Service. Laughing, having fun and as he left telling everyone he would see them on Sunday.
My friend tole me tearfully, he said that this year he was going to surrender his all to the Lord and will do and go wherever God told Him to. He was filled with joy and looking forward to serving the Lord in the new year. So why would God allow this to happen? Perhaps the answer is found in today’s verse. At his funeral service as my friend spoke, the Spirit moved and forty people gave their hearts to the Lord. The enemy meant it to destroy this young man’s influence who had totally given himself to God and to destroy his family and friends. But God couldn’t let his death go without turning it around and destroying the enemy and his plans instead. Now, there are forty more people who have been added to the Kingdom of God as His children. And to honor their loved ones memory and continue his legacy they too will tell others about the goodness of God even in the face of tragedy and grief.
As today’s verse says; God turned it around and people were saved from everything that was trying to destroy them. And they now will spend all eternity with their friend who is waiting for them with Jesus. We truly are loved with an everlasting love.
