And the Light shines on in the darkness, for the darkness has never overpowered it [put it out or absorbed it or appropriated it, and is unreceptive to it]. John 1:5 AMPC
Tonight at sundown, Hanukkah will begin with the lighting of a candle on the Menorrah. Then every night another candle will be lit and three blessings will be recited. A gift will be given and recieved and there will be celebrating and joy for the next eight nights.
Yesterday we learned why Hanukkah is a celebration. When the Maccabees (the hammer) reclaimed Jerusalem and cleansed the Temple, it was time to light the Temple Lamp. But the problem was there was only enough oil for one night. See it took at least eight days to cure the oil according to the directions God had given them in the wilderness. Instead of waiting for the eight days, they believed they needed to light the Lamp and because of their faith God made the oil last for eight nights until the new oil was ready. It was a miracle! Nothing could make the light go out. God not only performed a miracle but gave the Isrealites a foreshadowing of their Messiah. He was going to come as a Light into the darkness of this world and nothing in this world could ever put it out.
An even more amazing thing happened when Jesus left this earth. He didn’t leave us alone, He sent the Holy Spirit to live in those who would accept His gift of Salvation. Now the real miracle is that now His light lives in every Believer! He told us in Matthew 5:14 “Your lives light up the world. Let others see your light from a distance, for how can you hide a city that stands on a hilltop? This Hanukkah and Christmas be the light of the world Jesus enabled us to be that can never be extinguished.
