Create in me a clean heart, O God,
And renew a steadfast spirit within me. Restore to me the joy of Your salvation,
And uphold me by Your generous Spirit. Psalm 51:10,12
Eddie Espinosa had accepted Jesus as His Savior and Lord as a teenager. But it wasn’t until years later on his way to work that Holy Spirit placed the melody and words in his heart to Psalm 51. At a stop light he quickly scribbled down the words as he kept singing the melody. And the song Change My Heart O God was born.
See, although Eddie was a Believer and loved God he was feeling there were things in his life that he needed to change and get rid of. He remembered saying like Paul, “O wretched man that I am” and he said to the Lord, “the only way I can truly follow You is. . .You must change my heart.” And God answered with this song, that not only changed Eddie’s life and drew him closer to Jesus, but countless other people also. They either found the joy of Salvation for the first time, or they had that joy restored through the grace and love of our generous Savior and Lord.
This change happened because they allowed their hearts to be pliable and let the Potter mold it and make it into who He always created them to be. How’s your heart? Are you experiencing the joy of His salvation that has delivered us, forgiven us, provides for us, protects us, heals us and restores us? Do you allow Jesus to change and get rid of things that are hindering your relationship with Him? Whether you’re feeling distant or close to Jesus, singing this song will keep your heart soft enough to be molded by the Potter so you can live the abundant life Jesus died to give you.
Change my heart O God, Make it ever true. Change my heart O God, may I be like You. You are the Potter, I am the clay, mold me and make me, this is what I pray. Change my heart O God, may I be like You!
