The sick man said, ‘Sir, I do not have anyone who will help me. I need somebody who will put me into the pool. When the water starts to move, I try to get in. But someone else always gets in before me.’ John 5:7 Easy English Bible
Yesterday we talked about how we should allow ourselves to ask for help, because it actually strengthens us in ways we don’t even know we need. And it also reminds us that asking for help from others may bless the helper as much or even more than the one being helped.
But yesterday morning as in my quiet time with the Lord he asked me a question; “What about the people who don’t have anyone to help them.” I didn’t know what to say, but my heart became sad, because there are so many people who literally don’t have anyone to help them. There are also people who are in the same boat because they have isolated themselves from anyone who might want to help them. There is no specific age to this, loneliness seems to affect young and old alike.
Jesus showed that we can touch people’s lives who are lonely or don’t even want the help. He reached out to them by being aware of a need and then meeting that need. He slowed down enough to take time and see things through the eyes of His Father, things most people missed because they were only looking at the obvious. But Jesus took the time to stop and talk with them and showed them that He cared. When was the last time we noticed we haven’t seen someone for a while? And if we did, did we take the time to check on them? Have you noticed someone putting something back at the grocery store because they didn’t have enough money to pay for it? Could you have afforded to give them a few dollars to help? Have you noticed someone who was handicapped or disabled struggling to do something, but no one was offering to help?
God often gives us opportunity to be Jesus to others and in a world that has become more and more uncaring, it would be a welcome act that could change a life. Jesus had a heart of compassion that not only touched the person themselves, but affected others as well. Let’s pray that Holy Spirit would open our spiritual eyes to see the things the world misses and then show them the kindness and grace of Jesus.
