Then Jesus said to them, “You are such foolish, foolish people! You find it so hard to believe all that the prophets wrote in the Scriptures! Wasn’t it clearly predicted by the prophets that the Messiah would have to suffer all these things before entering his time of glory?” Then Jesus quoted them passage after passage from the writings of the prophets, beginning with the book of Genesis and going right on through the Scriptures, explaining what the passages meant and what they said about himself. Luke 24:25-27
On the day of the Resurrection Jesus was doing what He was sent to do, sharing the Good News that He was alive and well and fulfilled the Prophecies about Him. As He was walking about He met two men on the road to Emmaus who were believers. As they walked along He began to walk with them and join in their discussion. They were very sad and were telling Him all about the recent events and their disappointment because their Master was dead. And if that wasn’t bad enough they found out that the tomb now is empty. Now imagine they were walking and talking with Jesus about His death and burial because they didn’t recognize Him.
Jesus then reminded them of what the scriptures has said about the Messiah and that He would go through the very same things they were just sharing with Him. Remember the prophets didn’t only speak of His torture and death, but also His resurrection! After He did this He wanted to leave them, but they begged Him to eat with them. But this was no ordinary meal, it was it was one where Jesus was serving them and in the usual way He lifted up the bread, gave thanks and broke it. Then something amazing happened, their eyes were open and they realized who He was and in that instant He disappeared.
Now here’s where it gets good. It says they felt their hearts burning as He talked with them about the Scriptures. But it was when the bread was broken they could see. Jesus said I am the Bread of Life (John 6:35) saying that He was the Scriptures and when we break them and ingest them spiritually we are fed and nourished in a way that will give us everything we need. So here’s the question, do you just read the Scriptures that it causes a fire to burn in us longing for more? Or do we break it open and feed on it so we can be spiritually nourished and grow in Him? Oh yes my friend, the Resurrection is only the beginning.
