And become useful and helpful and kind to one another, tenderhearted (compassionate, understanding, loving-hearted), forgiving one another [readily and freely], as God in Christ forgave you. Ephesians 4:32
Yesterday September 11 was a day of remembering that 25 years ago the world changed forever. Just as two jet planes impacted the Twin Towers in New York City by terrorists, so was the impact on society as a whole. 2977 people lost their lives that day and we vowed that we will never forget who caused this tremendous loss of life and economic upheaval.
But just as 9/11 changed our way of life, so did 9/12, simply because we were all united against a common enemy. In a moment, how we related to one another made a 180. It seemed for the most part all our differences disappeared and we were all helping one another. The Congress and Senate stood intermingled on the steps of the Capitol and sang God Bless America. Democrat and Republican together standing side by side, agreeing that united we will stand, divided we will fall to the enemy. People were being kind and helping one another, asking no questions and nothing in return. Church’s were filled and not just on Sunday. Public prayer that was frowned upon was now being called for and Jesus’ name was being called upon openly. Bible sales were increasing and people were asking questions about the end of the world.
Oh, that those things would happen once again without a catastrophe. Only God can change and transform a heart, lift the veil of deception and expose the lies about our common enemy. As we remember who has been billowing and fanning the flames of discontent, anger and disunity. may we pray for all Americans to come together once again. To remember to be kind and loving to one another, thinking of others more than thinking of ourselves. And as we call on the name of Jesus may the church remember that scripture tells us when His people call on Him, He will be found and will answer us.
