If you have been snared with the words of your lips, If you have been trapped by the speech of your mouth. Proverbs 6:2
Have you ever wondered why God had Israel walk around the walls of Jericho six times without talking and then even on the seventh day they could only shout with a great shout after the trumpets blew? Well, today’s verse may help us understand. Proverbs 18:21 reminds us death and life are in the power of the tongue, but the beginning starts with being ensnared when our thoughts turn into word, that put things in motion. Remember it was with words that God created everything we call creation.
God knows us better than we know ourselves and He knew if left to talk, the Israelites would talk themselves right out of the victory He had planned. So it leaves us to wonder, what victory, provision, healing or miracle have we talked ourselves out of? Too often we have the Word of God or even His voice telling us what awaits us when we trust and believe in Him, but get sidetracked by what we see hear and feel. And before we know it, we’re declaring things like; this will never work, I don’t have what it takes, where is God? He’s not hearing my prayers. Sound familiar? And these are only a few of them. And with every negative word filled with unbelief the snare gets tighter. Then finally we find ourselves trapped where we don’t want to be by our own words.
Just like the 10 spies that not only thought they looked like grasshoppers to the giants, they said the giants though they looked like grasshoppers! Let’s not be like those spies, for they never saw what God had promised them and worse yet, they led others to the same fate by their words. Let’s make it a point to be careful with what we say and not call into being the exact opposite of what we want to see or are promised. Then we will see the world around us change because instead of speaking death into things, we will be speaking life into everything around us.
