And behold, a woman of Canaan came from that region and cried out to Him, saying, “Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David! My daughter is severely demon-possessed.” Matthew 15:22
When we read these words, we think how much faith this mother had in Jesus to deliver her child from evil spirits. Although she believed that in her heart, the fact that she was a Canaanite and was call Jesus Lord, Son of David was telling Jesus something else. She was pretending to be Jewish so He would listen to her. She thought that as a Canaanite he would never listen to or accept her. She was desperate she saw Him as her only hope, so she had to make herself acceptable to Him.
But instead of listening to her, He ignored her. Apparently she kept after Him to the point the disciples asked Him to send her away. Then He said, He only came for the lost sheep of Israel, and she realized her deception had been exposed but she persisted and she worshiped Him and said Lord, help me! Once again He confronted her saying, it wasn’t good to take the children’s bread and give it to the puppies. And in boldness she said, but even the puppies eat the crumbs that fall from the table from the table.
Then He knew she believed in Him and He granted her request that when she would get home her daughter would be well. He wanted her to know He accepted her not because of her nationality, but because she believed in Him and that He was her only hope. And because of that belief in Him she received her request for her daughter to be well. How often do we go before the Lord being anything but honest with Him? How many times do we stop going to Him for something because we think we don’t deserve what we are asking for? If we’re honest, we will take this revelation and decide to come before Jesus with an honest heart that knows it is His great pleasure to give us the desires of our hearts. So the next time you go before His Throne of grace, don’t give up when you don’t get an answer immediately, keep asking and it will be given to you.
