Your word I have treasured and stored in my heart,
That I may not sin against You. Psalm 119:11
Memorizing Scripture is better than your mobile phone. Can you believe I said that?! Think about it, when we memorize Scripture it’s like we don’t have to worry that our phone is charged, or we forgot it at home at we missed a call or text. When we memorize Scripture, it truly becomes the sword of the Spirit to us, always ready to be used to answer whatever comes before us. Whether it be an offense, a hurt, a decision or answer that needs wisdom, bring comfort and hope to another person, forgiveness, and the list could just go on and on. It is powerful and useful at all times.
But we may not believe memorizing Scripture is important simply because we don’t value the Word. Today’s Scripture tells us that when we treasure the Word, then we will want to store it in our hearts to be valued and kept close to our hearts. That’s why it helps us steer away from engaging in sinning it helps us keep our hearts aligned with God’s at a moments notice. It sure is quicker than carrying a Bible around or even when one is at hand to look it up. We can just go to the rolodex of our minds and in a second we can have His Word run through our minds, or speaking it.
I think we avoid memorizing Scripture because we think it’s too difficult or time consuming. So I want you to think about this, how many songs can we sing verbatim and never have a second thought that we even memorized it. How did that happen, because we heard it over and over until we memorized the words. You don’t have to memorize a verse or more a day. Take it slow, keep reading and repeating it until you’re saying it as easy as you sing your favorite song. By the way, the first verses I memorized as child, I learned were what we called Verse Songs, albeit I still sometimes have to sing the song to speak the verse, but I still do that with the song that taught me the twelve disciples and the books of the Bible. It doesn’t matter, those words are ever engraved in my mind and on my heart. Try it, God loves it when He knows we read His love letters to us and we treasured them in our hearts.
