So humble yourselves before God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. James 4:7 NLT
With all the chaos, confusion, anger and violence in our world today we can see the devil has uped his game. More and more people including non-believers are asking if we’re living in the end times. Although that question opens the door of opportunity to share what Jesus said would happen when the end time was drawing near (Matthew 24:4-8), too often people begin to focus on the devil, instead of looking to the answer, Jesus Himself. We’re playing right into the enemies hands by giving him so much attention and and generating fear.
It made me think of the old saying, “any attention is better than no attention, no matter how you get it.” Which led me to this verse. And when I researched the Greek words, one word and one definition jumped out at me, resist. Our first thought of this word means to fight, push back, stand against. But the Biblical Greek definition means to take a contrary position, 180 degrees. Which made me think, since he loves and wants attention, what is the best way then to resist him? Ignore him! That’s right, when he tries to get our attention by putting destructive or negative thoughts in our minds or makes us feel guilty and condemed we need to cast those thoughts out and remember what the Word says.
The best way to humble ourselves before God is to realize trying to “resist” the enemy in and of ourselves is futile. Not to mention dangerous to ourselves and in turn to others. We need the power of the Word to use as our sword through Holy Spirit. We need to declare it to ourselves and be reminded who we are and whose we are and that we are not our own we were purchased by the precious blood of Jesus. And he will flee from you for sure. Why don’t we try to put that into practice, to ignore the devil and all his ways, with the power of the Word and watch him flee!
