So Jesus answered them by saying, “I assure you and most solemnly say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself [of His own accord], unless it is something He sees the Father doing; for whatever things the Father does, the Son [in His turn] also does in the same way. John 5:19
When we think of Jesus and why He came to earth, the first thought is to save us by forgiving us of our sins and give us eternal life. And that is true, but His salvation is so much more than that. In the Greek it means restoration, soundness, health and well being, deliverance and preservation from danger of destruction. Basically everything we need to become the “new creation” He died and rose again to give us.
But God loved us way to much to for Jesus to just come and die and go back to heaven. He sent Him as a baby to live on this earth for 33 years so He could show us what it means to be a true child of God and how to use what He has given us. He became our example in so many ways. One of those is found in today’s verse. Notice it says He can do nothing of Himself only what He sees His Father doing. Why did He say that, He was the Son of God! He was being an example, so in He could tell us “I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing” John 15:5 so we would know we needed to be in a relationship with Him as He has with Father God in order to walk out our new life in Him.
How deep the love of God is for us that He wants to give us every opportunity to be able to live our new life to the full. He just didn’t tell us in His Word, He sent us a living breathing example of how to do it. You may be thinking, but He is Jesus the King of kings and Lord of lords, yes He is and always was and will be, but tomorrow we’re going to look at Scripture to see how deep His love goes for us so we have the right to call ourselves children of the Most Hight God.
