“Certainly I will go with you,” said Deborah, “but because of the course you are taking, the honor will not be yours, for the LORD will deliver Sisera into the hands of a woman.” So Deborah went with Barak to Kedesh.” – Judges 4:9
Today we’re are told is the beginning of a heat wave. And contrary to popular thought, heatwaves are nothing new. In June of 1778 during the Revolutionary war there was also a sweltering heatwave. I can’t imagine being in the heat with wool uniforms and women in multiple layers of fabric washing and hanging up clothe, cooking on a wood fired stove and just basic housework. But that’s exactly what was happening.
There was a young women Mary Ludwig Hays courageously who would run into the chaos of Battle with a bucket and ladle to give parched and exhausted soldiers some cool, refreshing water. One day as she was on the battlefield her husband fell over from heat exhaustion, she pulled him aside, gave him water and promptly began to take over operating his cannon while under heavy enemy fire. Most people would know her as Molly Pitcher, a woman much like Deborah and Yael in Scripture. All three of them saw a need that they could fill when no one else was able to do it.
For those who are willing and step out in faith God will anoint with His Spirit to accomplish what needs to be done whether man or woman, even a child if that is what will bring Him glory and honor. God truly doesn’t have favorites, and He has placed us here and now as He did with Esther, “for such a time as this.” Are you willing to do whatever needs to be done knowing God is with you?
