For I will satisfy the weary soul, and every languishing soul I will replenish.” Jeremiah 31:25 ESV
There is a line in the Christmas song O Holy Night, that says “the weary world rejoices”. I would say after the year we’ve experienced that’s an understatement when we believe in the hope that Jesus brought into this world yesterday over 2000 years ago.
It’s amazing to me that a verse that was written centuries ago would be so applicable today. But then again, I’m amazed every time it happens, because our God is so awesome! I mean when you go deep into this verse, it speaks to us loud and clear, especially when we consider what our souls are; our mind, will and emotions. So what does weary mean? What about being weary, well, do any of these ring a bell with how we’ve felt? To wear out, tire, exhaust, irk, fatique, sap; a heavyweight. .Now add to that lanquishing; to be or become weak or feeble; lose strength or vigor. To exist or continue in miserable or disheartening conditions. Failing to make progress or success.
So basically we just described a majority of the people in the world. I like what one commentary said it’s likened to leather straps that have become dried and brittle in need of some replentishment. And that’s just what Jesus has done. He’s provided that replenishment, like a cool waterfall pouring out over our souls. No matter how hard we may try, there is nothing human we can possibly do to restore ourselves when we are truly weary and lanquishing, we need the provision and source only Jesus can supply. Take this last week before the new year and allow Jesus to replenish your soul by spending time in His word and presence. Ask Him to help you put things in perspective and begin to see this past year through His eyes. Eyes that only see possibilities, not as things are but as they should be. There would be no better way to begin 2021 with a new perspective and attitude.
