“I know you inside and out, and find little to my liking. You’re not cold, you’re not hot—far better to be either cold or hot! You’re stale. You’re stagnant. You make me want to vomit. You brag, ‘I’m rich, I’ve got it made, I need nothing from anyone,’ oblivious that in fact you’re a pitiful, blind beggar, threadbare and homeless.” Revelation 3:15-17 msg.
With Christmas right around the corner I was checking where my ornament box was. As I opened it I began to chuckle as I picked up a figurine from the movie ”A Christmas Story” of the scene where Flick gets his tongue stuck to the flagpole. With this cold weather, just the thought of it sent shivers down my spine.
But have you ever wondered why metal feels so much colder to the touch in freezing temperatures than other materials such as wood or plastic? It’s because metal is good conductor of heat and heat moves through it quickly. That’s why when we touch metal, it actually is pulling the heat out of our bodies and into itself. And the colder the metal, the more heat it draws into itself. It made me think that the world is like that with us. We can set out to love the Lord, with all our hearts and have a burning desire to know the way He wants us to live so that we can live life to the fullest.
But then the things of this world just seem to pull that burning fire and passion for Him away from us. Before we know it we are finding ourselves being lukewarm to the world and God. We’ve lost that passion and desire and we’ve become complacent and feel powerless. Truth is we still have the power and fire of the Holy Spirit living inside us, all we need to do is let go of the world! Let go of those things that drain you of your passions and desires, and they are different for everyone. Take time the rest of this week to spend uninterrupted time with the Lord and ask Him to show you the things that are pulling you away from Him and His purposes for you. It will be time well spent and you will find direction and guidance back to His warmth and fire that will combat even these sub zero temperatures. You will find life has purpose and meaning and the power and passion to live it to the fullest measure.
