The Word (Christ) was in the beginning. The Word was with God. The Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. He made all things. Nothing was made without Him making it. Life began by Him. His Life was the Light for men. The Light shines in the darkness. The darkness has never been able to put out the Light. John 1:1-5
If you are a regular visitor to our devotional page, you noticed there were no devotions last week. The first two silent days were because I was sick, but as I was getting ready to write one for Wednesday, God spoke to my heart and stopped me and asked this question. What if Christmas as we know it, never happened? Probably because I was stressing that I had fallen behind with my decorating, baking and shopping due to my not feeling up to it. I believe He wanted to me to realize even when we truly know what Christmas is about we can get caught up in what it isn’t.
Think about it. If I wouldn’t have put up the lights, Jesus would still be the One who brought light into this dark world. And unlike Christmas lights, His Light will never go out! If there was no tree, wreath or evergreen garland, He still would be the giver of eternal life to those who accept His gift of salvation. If I never made another cookie, or turkey dinner He still is the Bread of Life that sustains us on a daily basis. If another Christmas ball was never hung again, the love of God would still go on without end. And if another gift was never bought, that would be ok because the greatest gift we were ever given was born over 2000 years ago.
So how important are all those symbols of Christmas? I think we hate to admit it, but the answer is not very. But they are very good reminders of what Christmas is truly about and where our focus should be. So if you’re falling behind like me take heart, relax, slow down and begin to enjoy all the reasons we celebrate Christmas in the first place, Jesus Christ and His love for us.
Let Him show you how to be the Light to others. See that He is the reason there is more than just this earthly life. That because of Him we will never have to hunger or thirst again to feel fulfilled and live a life of significance. All because He loved us so much He was willing to give His Son as a gift that would change our lives forever if we are willing to receive this amazing gift like no other.
So along with all the symbols we so greatly love at this time, let’s use this last week before Christmas to prepare our hearts for the Giver of all good gifts.
